Exhibition Proposal: Cycles of Renewal
My ground installations use materials from the landscape. For my exhibition, I plan to use sand, mesquite charcoal and seashells. I started this series in Canada titled "Regeneration".

My exhibition will focus on gathering personal and collective realities and transform them using ancestral regenerative imaginings through drawings, video and ground installations. My work speaks about renewal, cycles and transformation using local materials from South Texas. Sand, mesquite charcoal and seashells will interconnect in different densities in my work. At times, the imagery resembles snakes, celestial beings and circular patterns. My work responds to the space and I allow it to guide me. Depending on the space I am given, I will determine the amount of work. My goal is for the pieces to speak to each other, as a circular conversations on revival.

Regeneration is a multi-media installation composed of video and “ground” sculpture reclaiming dual identity, rebirth, and movement which are informed by my experiences as a Mexican-American immigrant. I grow in scale regenerative mesoamerican symbolism of a seashell encompassing duality within its demarcating lines.
I use powdered mesquite charcoal and pine to form two lines, one dotted and one continuous, into a cyclical movement.
My work will also include video work capturing natural cycles in the South Texas landscape. I started this series in 2022 and my work "currents" speaks about how nature can rewrite and renew us. I wrote a spoken word poem along with my video work: To rewrite my body (excerpt) I am here declaring as a way to gesture my body inside out as Gloria Anzaldua mentions. I ask: What am I to stay with as I cross borders carrying histories of violence to enter similar histories. I walked into other lands seeking a confrontation of self. Mountains speak to me, Water speaks to me. |
